Not sure if you should replace your roof?
I guess we can all agree on the fact that having a good solid roof on your house is crucial be it Okotoks or anywhere else, unless you enjoy water trickling down your walls. But seriously, over-aged or leaking roof can threaten your safety and cause severe damages to your house. If you are not sure about the health of your roof, look for these warning signs:
- Brown spots on the ceiling
This is one of the most obvious signs that there is a leak in your roof. And the chances are that the damage done is bigger than you can see from the inside. Ideally you should avoid getting to this point by regularly checking your roof.
- Missing shingles
Another visible fact at first sight. Living in an area with frequent wind warnings and severe weather changes, as in Okotoks, may take a toll on your roof shingles. It should not be a problem to replace the missing shingles in majority of cases, but you should be prepared that the new shingles will not exactly match the original ones that discoloured over the years. You can keep patching for some time, but then you might want to replace the entire roof.
- Moss or algae covered shingles
Moss usually appears on the shady or north facing side of the roof. Another condition for its growth are humidity and dust. While moss or algae covered shingles don’t necessarily mean that you have to replace the roof right away, it’s presence definitely shortens the lifespan of your roof.
- Curled shingles
There are different reasons why roof shingles curl such as inadequate ventilation, improper installation or simply reaching the end of their life cycle. It’s not a good thing and you can expect problems or leaks any time.
- Neighbours replacing their roofs
None of your business you might say, but the houses built around the same time that are being exposed to the same weather conditions have similar useful life. So if you see roofers on your buddy’s house across the street, you might as well ask him for their phone number.
We generally don’t really pay attention to our roofs, it’s still there and it’s too high, right?
